Basics: What is Transitioning? Hair Regimen for Transitioning (from Chemical/Heat Damaged to Natural Hair)

This is totally a personal choice. But I personally and from few more feedback that using sulfate-free shampoo does make a HUGE difference...skipping sulfates means by default skipping silicones. Using too  much of silicones in the long run does dry out our hair more. BUT, the choice is yours. Many curlies love silicones, many totally hate it. If you are not on a tight budget, I would suggest following the sulfate-silicone free regimen as mentioned here. It makes a lot of difference to the scalp and hair.

I have been wanting to write many many posts on Curlacious. But there are just wayyyy too many reasons to postpone writing a post. Usually, 2 of my friends always call and ask if I am alive since nothing is up on the blog and then I rushhh and write…  😉 This time, I am writing a post for you curlies out there…. Day before yesterday, I had a nice long chat with another curlie who was new to my blog (that’s the best part about blogging..I get to talk and interact with such sweet & awesome people!!). She had landed here looking to revive her straightened hair. She wants to grow out her hair and was asking about ways and steps to do that. Since this question is something that I often get asked and this post was already due for really long, I thought why not to write a whole […]

What is “Hair Elasticity”? Key to Protein-Moisture Balance!

Hair care is a lot about knowing few nuances of your hair properties…that’s why I like to discuss and explain few of the basics of our hair properties which affect of hair and the hair care regimen that we follow. After Curly Hair Typ(Pattern), Density & Width and porosity,  now I am gonna be writing about another important property: Elasticity.   Elasticity is probably one of the most important properties of hair that we need to keep in mind while doing protein treatments or deep conditioning treatments. What is Hair Elasticity? The general definition of elasticity is applicable to hair too. The ability of our hair strands to stretch and to get back to original shape is called hair’s elasticity. Why is Elasticity important? Hair Elasticity determines hair’s health and strength. It helps us know whether our hair needs moisture or protein. Gives an idea on how much manipulation our […]

Curlacious_Cowashing India_Curly Wavy hair

But, then this topic of Cowashing is something that needs its own post and I am rather late in writing it up. 🙂   What is Cowashing? Conditioner-only washing. Yes! it is as simple as that! Cowashing refers to a method of using conditioner instead of shampoo to wash our hair. We totally skip the shampoo in our hair was regimen and replace it with a silicone-free conditioner.   How to cowash? The only thing you need for cowashing is a Silicone free conditioner. Get your hands on a good silicone-free conditioner and you are good to go. The steps to follow for cowash as just like shampooing. You can read a step-wise post here: How to shampoo. […]

Quick Tip to unclog your Flaxseed Gel Filters

curlacious_flaxseed-gel-filter_unclog.jpg.jpg

Hello Curlies!! If you have been making flaxseed gel frequently, then you would most probably be well acquainted with this equipment in the above pic. There are few variations of the same. I use this one at my place. My Mom has a much finer filter with two more layers of very fine mesh added. There are also smaller filters which are used to filter tea. But the ones I use are all iron filters. If you have also been using iron filters to filter your flaxseed gel and are looking for ways to unclog it, you are in luck! Even after washing immediately after use or with hot water or with all the scrubs at home, sometimes our iron filters gets clogged here and there. I have not faced major clogging but few meshes here and there do get clogged. But the one at mom’s place with smaller mesh gets clogged more […]

Awesome Additional Uses of Flaxseed Gel + Guest Blogger Intro!

Have you ever had excess flaxseed gel in your fridge and wondered how to finish it off before it exceeds its shelf life?? I have fore sure. Sometimes, I make huge batch of flaxseed hoping to wash my hair or style and restyle my hair more often but end up not using it much. By the end of two weeks, I find myself staring at a jar full of unused flaxseed which I know is gonna go down the drain and my heart aches… 🙁 even though flaxseed gel doesn’t cost much, throwing away all that goodness is such a sad thing to do. While discussing with my friend Sunitha about hair care, I ended up sharing the flaxseed recipe. She has a layerlob (long bob!) and is a 2a wavy. She doesn’t really style her hair curly but is a natural hair care enthusiast. So she immediately ordered flaxseed […]

Let’s talk about Shampooing: How to shampoo?!

Silicone free hair products in India

Once I had decided that I was shifting to sulfate-free shampoos, the next question on my mind was…. Will it be strong enough to clean my scalp and hair. After all I live in a humid city which means plenty of sweating…add to that the day to day dust and pollution…and you get a really dirty scalp to clean… The Answer seems to be “Yes”.. Sulfate free shampoo and cowashing clean the scalp and hair equally well. The basics of that depends on “how” rather than “with what” for hair cleansing.   Will  mild shampoo clean scalp efficiently? Basically, the cleaning of the scalp is done by the rubbing and scrubbing that we do while shampooing rather than the shampoo itself. If we apply any shampoo, and do not massage or rub it into hair, irrespective of the strong detergents in it, it will not clean efficiently. I read this comparison […]

Let’s talk about Shampooing: Sulfates, No Sulfates or Cowashing!!

India Best Curly hair products

Recently, there has been so much hype regarding the ingredients in our usual daily use Shampoos that somebody needs to clear the air (on cleaning the hair!:-D) and make sense of it all. Nowadays, we cannot buy any product without looking at the ingredients list first. From our shampoo to toothpastes and soaps and detergents and foundation to nail polishes for everything we check the ingredients first and buy them later. Well I do not call this a hype but an outcome of being more informed. However, more often than  not, some of us tend to question such behaviours.  Before going all sulfate and silicone free on my hair, when I read about the curly girl hair routine (like a third person not affected by it!) I couldn’t phantom the thought of not picking up my usual shampoo. Not choosing by the look or packaging or the color of the bottle. […]
