Review: Kinky Curly Curling Custard

Finally after loads of experimentation and a lot of trials, here I am with the review of Kinky Curly Curling Custard. This is one cult product that almost ALL curlies rave about!! Almost everyone says that they loved it from the first use!! That wasn’t the case with me! I had a long learning curve with this product. I spoke to many curlies on how they use it and tried different methods.

I did like the product from first use. But I also knew that it had much more potential and that it could be ‘loved’.

Ingredients:

Botanical Infustion of water, horsetail, chamomile, nettle and marshmallow, organic aloe vera juice, agave nectar extract, tocopheryl acetate (Vitamin E), pectin (thickening agent), citric acid, potassium sorbate (mild preservative) and natural fragrance.

The product lists some awesome ingredients!! However, I am not sure if the product list is complete. I feel some ingredients seem to be missing. However, this easily dissolves in water and doesn’t feel wax-y or silicone-y on the hair. so, I am good on that!

Packaging:

It comes in a cute transparent tub.

You Can Buy it Here:

Consistency & Fragrance:

It has this soft jelly like consistency and smells like pudding. Every time I open this tub, I start craving pudding!! LOL

It looks cloudy and translucent, almost like flaxseed gel. However, it is way different and much more easier to apply than the FSG.

Spreadability:

When I rub it on my palms, it feels so smooth and silky. The product spreads very easily on the hair.

Result from first use – I was not much happy

How I use it?

I started by using a pea size (just like everyone on social media said); BUT that did not give me happy results!! 🙁 My hair did form chunky curls, but there was more frizz than needed. I had this Love-Disappointment relationship with this product. I loved the results but I wanted more!!

I started using in Nov2017. Then in Jan2018, I forgot it at my bro’s place for about 3-4 months. Once I got it back, every time I used this, it rained unexpectedly!! On the whole, used it for some months on and off, in rain and no-rain, humid and non-humid climates. One thing was sure, this product enhanced my curls, gave them shine and added a lot of body.

Here are my tips for using KCCC:

  • Amount: You don’t have to scoop it out, however just dipping a finger won’t work as well. Use the below shown amount for one section of your hair.
    • Customize the amount based on your hair’s liking.
    • Start with lesser amount and then increase at the next wash day if you are not happy.
    • But the below amount of product for a chunky section of hair works for me. And I need 3 such lumps to cover my entire hair.

  • Application: Make sure you apply it with a LOT of water.
    • Water is the key for this product. Your hair needs to be dripping wet.
    • While water runs down your hair, apply this product evenly throughout the length – rake it, scrunch it, pump it, do whatever you want!!
    • Just make sure you are covering all of your hair.
    • This doesn’t really feel product-y when wet. But you immediately see clumps forming.

  • Application Technique: How you apply it makes a huge difference to the results.
    • If you scrunch or pulse or squish,  it gives very fat, chunky, voluminous curls – best for people with thin or fine hair.
    • If you rake it or smooth it on (praying hands, raking, smoothing), it gives more defined and sleek curls – best for people with thick or coarse hair.
    • These results are, in general, specific for these styling techniques. But with KCCC, these same results are very much enhanced. So you need to be more mindful of the results you want and the technique you use.

  • Leave-in: I pair it with loads of leave-in conditioner, nowadays.
    • When I leave-in less conditioner, I get sleek and defined curls. Under humidity, it lasts a little better.
    • When I leave-in aloooot of conditioner, I get voluminous curls. But sometimes the chunky curls get poofy by day2.
    • However, leave-in and results are very subjective – we get different results based on the leave-in and the weather.

One of the gorgeous results that I got!!

When it just doesn’t work:

  • Re-apply: On some days, I see my hair frizzing up as it dries. So I take a tiny bit of this, water it down (very lightly), spread between my palms and then reapply in smoothing motion without disturbing the curls. Kind of make the frizz stick back together and get benefit from the additional custard. Works for me!! If this doesn’t work, then follow the next step while in shower.
  • Pairing with another gel: When I pair it with another styling gel, I get super awesome results. When it is really humid, I prefer to follow this KCCC with a gel having good hold. So I get the big, fat, shiny and really ringlet-y curls from KCCC and the gel gives the added hold!
