Revlon Flex Body Building Protein Conditioner: Review for Curly and Wavy Hair

Revlon Flex Protein Conditioner is one of the cheapest silicone free hair conditioners in India and easily available too!

Many curlies asked me for its review and if it could be used for cowashing. I had grabbed this bottle long ago but didn’t use it long enough to write a review. Finally, I have been using it continuously now to give a review on it.

Rs. 250 for 523ml

You can buy it here:

Product Ingredients:

(Silicone-free, contains parabens)

Aqua, Stearalkonium chloride, Cetyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben, Ceteryl Alcohol, Polysorbate 60, PEG 150 Stearate, Steareth 20, Hydroxy Ethyl Cellulose, Retinyl Palmitate, Hydrolysed Silk, Panthenol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Fragrance, Sodium Chloride, Methyl Chloro Isothiazolinone, Methyl Isothiazolinone Citric Acid

It is a huge cylindrical, translucent and sturdy plastic bottle. It used to come with a flip type lid. But now has been changed to a pump type dispenser which is a total fail. The pump in my product did not work at all. Not even a single drop comes out from the pump (well then can this be called travel friendly as it will not spill at all?? Lol!!). I have dropped this multiple times but the bottle is strong enough to handle it 😉

It has a weirdly fruity fragrance. Very strong. But doesn’t stay on hair post wash. Even on using as a leave on,  the fragrance stays mild and goes off after sometime.

Consistency & Slip:

It is a pale yellow colored product with mildly runny consistency. Not very thick and not very runny.

The slip of this conditioner is not at all good. The moment I apply it on my hair, it feels as if all the water is soaked out.  So it is not that good at detangling.

It does not have enough slip to help detangle more tangled hair.

My Experience:

Revlon flex conditioner spreads easily but the slip is kind of bad. The amount of conditioner required to detangle and to cover entire hair satisfactorily is more. For detangling,  I end up using excessive water and a lot of conditioner is required. For every section of hair, I kept adding extra water to add slip.

I did use it for cowashing and this conditioner does a decent job of that. I usually do no cowash my hair. I prefer shampooing with sulfate free shampoo rather. As many curlies asked me regarding this conditioner’s use for cowashing,  I tried it out. It does work very well for cowashing. It cleaned the scalp well and there were no residues or stickiness left. I did not face any itching or flaking with Revlon Flex as cowash. Even for cowashing, I did need a lot of conditioner and a lot of water for the desired slip.

Most interesting observation was that me and my go-to feedback curl friends realized that on using this conditioner, hair seems to be elongated. That is, my curls hang a bit looser than what they are when I use other conditioner. I tried using different routines of applying the conditioner as well as the same as other products, but every time my hair felt looser. Not only mine but another  curly too did notice the same with her hair. (Did any of you face this?!)

This is called a “protein conditioner” however the protein, ‘Hydrolysed Silk’ is lower on the ingredients list. However, I can see the Shine post drying….same as that the hydrolysed silk in Loreal Smooth Intense Conditioner gives my hair.

  • Very cheap
  • Silicone free
  • Works very well for cowashing
  • Gives some shine to hair
  • Easily available
  • Sturdy packaging

  • Poor slip
  • Does not give hair any “body” as the name wrongly suggests.
  • Need a lot of conditioner at each wash for detangling or for cowashing which ultimately ends in products getting used up faster. So ultimately it is not very cost effective. (Still is cheaper than higher end products, though!)
  • Makes curls looser (this might  be a pro for people who are deliberately looking for products to loosen up your curls’ look). That said, it is not like this changed the hair type all together but as we curlies  know our hair very well, we can make out the difference!
  • The pump cap is useless. The earlier flip cap was better. This pump did not work at all for me. I have to open the lid and pour out the product every time I want to use which makes it clumsy to use.
  • Not travel friendly package (coz it is huge)

Overall verdict

Revlon Flex conditioner is a cheap and easily available Curly Girl method safe (that is silicone free) conditioner available in India. It has low slip and doesn’t help detangle very tangled hair. But it works well as a cowashing conditioner. Considering that this is cheap, you can use it exclusively for cowashing and add other conditioners in your kitty for detangling and for leave in.

I realized that I have written the cons in much details and pros less. This conditioner is fine but not awesome. Do read the overall verdict to make up your mind on this.
