The Body Shop Rainforest Moisture Hair Butter – Review!

If you have been reading my blog for few days, you might know the importance of deep conditioning your hair frequently!! As much as I love to deep condition my hair, more often than not I get too lazy to whip out concoctions in the kitchen.. But I mostly manage to drag myself to the kitchen to try something or the other. However, there are days when I am travelling or I just am not able to find the time or ingredients to blend and apply to my hair. It is then that this The Body Shop Rainforest Moisture Hair Butter comes handy.

Review for curly/wavy hair:

If you have not read about my hair properties, then let me tell you quickly that I am currently transitioning from heat damaged to natural hair, I have low porosity 2b/2c mix hair which tends to get dry and frizz easily. So, in my search to find a good deep conditioning treatment for the times that I travel (which was very often in recent past), I decided to get my hands on this product. I had been looking for a deep conditioning treatment for a very long time, however could never really decide. After going silicone and sulfate free, this one was the only choice that I had (if you know of any other silicone free deep conditioning treatment, please do let me know in the comments below of share your review in the Forums.)

So, about my experience now~~ The consistency is very thick, however it is easy to spread on hair. A very little amount is enough to cover my less dense, long hair. Which means that this tub is gonna last looooooooong. It has a very nice fragrance which lingers on for a while after wash. I leave it on for about 15-20mins and then rinse out completely. It makes my hair super soft and well-conditioned. Hair feels and looks healthy!! My hair retains more moisture, frizz is controlled and curls feel smoother and bouncy. Even without a gel my hair seems well defined, my hair curls more and has a bounce!! I had been using it once every 2 weeks. I am totally in love with this hair butter. It is called a hair butter, however does not feel that heavy on the hair. However, if you have low porosity hair like mine, you need to follow 1 or 2 extra steps to get maximum benefit from this product. Will share “Steps to follow” at the end of this post.

Pros:

  • Conditions hair very well
  • Moisturizes, controls frizz, makes hair look and feel healthy, combats dryness
  • Curls look smooths and bouncy
  • A little goes a long way
  • Has a pleasant fragrance
  • Silicone and paraben free
  • Packaging is leak-proof, sturdy and travel friendly

Cons:

  • Price is high
  • Tub packaging might be a con for some as it requires dipping fingers into the product for each scoop. Hey! you can always use a spoon/spatula, right? 😉

Overall Verdict:

It is an awesome deep conditioner. If you are an “on-the-go” girl who travels frequently with no time for kitchen blends, or just too lazy to try and figure out the ingredients to put in your hair mask, this product is for you. That said, don’t we all get lazy at times and just want to treat ourselves to some relaxed hair spa at home? If yes, then this product is a must have. It has awesome fragrance and is like a boon for your curls and waves!! 🙂 It is silicone and parabens free, so totally perfect fpr our gorgeous curlies and wavies who follow the sulfate and silicone free regimen.

How I use it?

  • I wash my hair with sulfate-free shampoo with warm water, squeeze out excess water and then apply this Deep Conditioner (DC) to my hair by dividing in 4-5 sections.
  • Gently detangle hair using fingers and then run a wide tooth comb spread the product evenly.
  • Wear a shower cap putting all the hair in. Sometimes I wrap a towel dipped in warm water over the shower cap. The warm water and warmth from the towel or cap helps in opening up the hair cuticles which in turns helps in the product seeping in. If you have low porosity hair, I would suggest you always follow this step while applying deep conditioning treatments.
  • Keep it for 15-20 minutes
  • Rinse off with cold water.
  • Style as usual

P.S. I usually skip my conditioner when I apply this deep conditioner to my hair.

Sadly, I misplaced my TBS hair  butter somewhere while travelling 🙁 I had used it few times, however there was so so soooooooooo much of product left in that pretty little tub!! 🙁 I called and checked everywhere I went but no one has it….I am just hoping that I find it lying somewhere in my mom’s bathroom or cupboard or kitchen (just anywhere) next time when I go there…

Dear TBS hair butter, please come back to me…I miss you so much!!! 🙁 🙁

  1. Hi Divya
I used the hair butter yesterday. But it has left my hair feeling a bit sticky.
I first shampooed my oiled hair with the Giovanni 2 chic shampoo, then applied the hair butter on my wet hair(used warm water). I detangled my hair using this butter only and then kept it on for about 15 min. I had worn a shower cap to lock in the moisture. Post this, washed off the hair butter and then applied the flaxseed gel as usual.
Maybe I used the wrong quantity…Not sure. Also, this does not provide the slip as is provided by the enliven conditioner.

    1. Hey Gargi…
ya the amount used can make hair sticky if it is more. Also, if the oil was not washed properly and then butter was applied on oily hair, it might also cause stickiness. next time may be can try without oiling? or a little less quantity.

and yaaa i too noticed.. Enliven conditioners give the best slip…even other conditioner are not that good with the slip factor…I have mentioned same in this post: http://curlacious.com/index.php/2016/12/27/review-loreal-paris-smooth-intense-silk-protein-conditioner/

then this is a Hair Butter, can surely not compare…. 🙂 better to detangle with oil while dry or with rinse-off conditioner than the butter…. 🙂

        1. Hey Gargi….the quantity differs from hair to hair….but basically, the butter should just mildly coat hair strands and should not be layered on much…..
you will have to experiment and do trial and error to find the right quantity….start with lesser amount….

    1. Hey Devika… well that’s actually a good observation… 🙂 we usually know that we are not supposed to use alcohol ingredient but never really look for it while reading product ingredients. And focus only on silicones…

Well, to clarify…the alcohol that needs to be avoided are volatile ones: Alcohol Denat, SD Alcohol, SD alcohol 40 etc. which are drying.

Whereas there are these long chain, fatty alcohols that have conditioning properties and hence are used in conditioners and deep conditioning masks. These are good for moisturising our hair. Cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, Stearyl alcohol etc. are the fatty alcohols which are good for our curly hair 🙂

So the alcohol in this hair butter is for conditioning purposes and totally fine for our hair.

    1. Hi Sweetheart. .. yes you can use this for your hair too… It will surely control the frizz and help in keeping hair moisturization. Just follow the steps that I have mentioned. .. wash hair with warm water before apply the hair butter….After applying, wrap a shower cap followed by a warm towel… will work awesomely!!!

Would love to hear from you. Please do leave a comment.
