I recently got my haircut at the Tony and Guy. It was my first haircut in 2 years so I really wanted to be sure before I finalised the stylist. I had been following Lucy’ work for some time but was not finding the time to make an appointment. Meanwhile, a friend had a disastrous haircut experience at Bounce, Adyar and I suggested her to check out Lucy’s profile. Lucy fixed my friend’s cut and gave her cute layers and few long bangs!! That’s when I decided to take the plunge and get rid of the dead ends and get some shape to my hair.

Which Salon and Stylist?

Lucy Neihsial (Instagram Handle: glambylucy_ak) at Tony and Guy, Thoraipakkam. She is one of those few stylists in chennai who are happy to handle curly hair in its natural glory. She does not force you to straighten your hair or behave uncomfortable around curly hair.

Fixing Appointment

I fixed the appointment with Lucy by having a chat with her. You can also call the Tony & Guy Thoriapakkam outlet and fix an appointment with her.

What I wanted:

For the haircut, I wanted to:

• Get rid of the really dead ends.
• Give my hair some layers.
• Wanted to let go of ‘some’ lenght. Get to a length that was manageable yet good.

I wanted the below for the hair color:

• Something not-too-obvious and low-maintenance
• Wanted to cover the greys. which my front hair line has propped like crazy!!
• I liked the idea of highlights but wasnt ready to commit yet.
• Wanted warm brown color.
• I wasnt really sure if i wanted to color, though!!

Pre-appointment Experience!

I messaged Lucy on Instagram as well as her WhatsApp. She was very quick to respond. Discussed my hair woes and expectations. I also needed to cover my greys and get some color added. So we discussed colors and cuts. Shared my hair pics and she shared few pics of her work. It was a very quick discussion and we quickly decided on what we wanted to do. Also discussed and fixed the appointment. It was pretty smooth. She even shared the location of the Tony and Guy for me to be easy to reach.

Hair Cut and Color Experience

The moment I stepped in for the appointment, Lucy brought in the colour suggestions. we zeroed in on a warm brown. She had suggested me to go one tone lighter but I did not want to commit on a lighter shade so decided on a very warm brown (I do not remember the shade!). She colored my hair prior to wash and cut.

The coloring process took about 20-30 mins to select, mix and apply the color. It was left on my hair for about 30 minutes. Then washed and rinsed. The haircut followed. Lucy suggested the length that I have now. For my curl pattern, she did predict correctly that if I keep too long, it might weigh down my curls. So we decided to let go of few more inches and add few more layers.

The best things:

The cut was all I could ask for.

The length and shape were as per my expectation.

My hair was scrunched and diffused at the end of the cut.

All through the process I was made comfortable taking about curly hair and ways to style it. We discussed hair products that I use and the ones she uses on curly hair. Lucy showed them to me, used them on my hair and I really liked the effect of those on my hair. She is very open about the fact that she doesnt use CG products but is accepting of CG method. Even though she did share the products, there is no expectation for me to buy those. BUT I really wanna go back and try those set of Sabastian products once. (no, those are not CG friendly).

Things that “could” have been different:

• The products used are not CG friendly. But then, I don’t mind that. Most salons in India do not use CG products. If you want, you can check with the stylist and take your own products.
• The styling is a little different from our usual curly hair styling routine. Still hair is diffused and styled without straightening (so yay!).
• The hair color I chose looks like my hair’s natural color. It has a tint under sunlight but not really visible otherwise. I have already decided to go a bit ‘obvious’ the next time!! 😀
