Cantu Define & Shine Custard was love at first use!! No no…don’t just stop reading… there is so much you need to know!!! LOL
So, hubby dearest got it from Paris for me….but it is available at Amazon India site here: Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Curling Custard. If you are in the US, Cantu products are very easily available there. And if by any chance you are in Paris, I got it from superbeaute.fr site. This site was suggested by a CurlFriend @racheljcx. Going by her suggestion, I ordered loads of hair products from that site and they delivered promptly. Andddd the packaging was so awesome that hubby got em as it till India!!!
Now, lets get into the review of this product.
Pros:
- A little goes a long way
- Gives good definition
- Controls frizz very well
- Gives moisture to hair
- Makes hair soft
- Spreads very easily
- Fragrance is excellent and stays till the next wash (I can’t stop sniffing my hair!!LOL)
- Works very well for refreshing hair
- Hair stays good up to day 3
Cons:
- Flakes if you use too much
- Need to figure out the right amount to apply
- Availability and price in India when compared to US
- Packaging is not that travel friendly. It is a big tub.
Instructions on the product:
Fragrance:
It has a very very strong fruity fragrance. The fragrance stays in my hair till the next wash. The very first thing that hit me on opening up the bottle was its fragrance. It is strong yet not heady so I totally love it.
It smells like a pudding…would feel like scooping and tasting it up!! haha….No don’t do that!! You don’t wanna waste your hair product, do you?? LOL!! :-p
Consistency:
It looks a bit slimey. You know how flaxseed gel looks? Almost the same with slightly runny consistency.
But it spreads very easily and has the right slip to cover your hair.
Ingredients:
You can see the list in below pic. It is free of silicone, paraben, mineral oils, paraffin, drying alcohol etc. and is CG friendly.
My experience:
I am in love with this styling custard. It has become my go-to styling product. I have used it with a leave-in, without a leave-in, after a deep conditioning treatment, for refreshing….in short, I have used in all the ways that I can use it in my routine… and it works well all the time.
However, it is very easy to overboard with this product, coz while applying on wet hair, it feels as if we haven’t applied enough of this. Please start with applying very less…just make sure you covered all of your hair. You would be able to see your hair clumping well. That should be enough.
Also, we need to be really careful with the amount that we use. If I apply too much, this flakes like hell. Immediately on drying it will cause white flakes and you might end up looking like you had a dandruff overload. That’s a major cons. Buuuutt if we are careful with the quantity and use it judiciously, it will last you longer and will give awesome results.
How I use it?
On wash days I apply it on very wet hair. Smooth it along the lengths and then scrunch it… I do not apply it on my scalp and apply it only on the lengths. It forms a mild cast which can be Scrunched out (SOTC’d) very easily. On drying my hair feels soft too!! Yay!!
It gives me good definition and frizz free curls. Even when my hair is feeling dry and I don’t find time to deep condition, this makes my hair feel moisturized annnddd defined. I like to combine it with the Cantu Curl Activator Cream when I am looking for added hold/frizz control or when I have need to travel and reach the destination with good looking hair!!! (Saw the Kodaikanal Pics?)
Sometimes, for refreshing, I wet my palms slightly, take a pea size amount of this custard, spread between palms and smooth over my hair in sections. For each section repeat the same. HERE, pea size IS a pea size.
If you use this and face flaking, then please clarify your hair and from next time use less amount to style.
Final Verdict:
This is my most favourite styling product till date. In case budget is not a concern and can splurge, then go grab this right away!! If you haven’t found your HG styling product yet, this might just be it…If you are in the US or have someone coming over from US… then get this..it is wayyyy cheaper there. It gives hair definition, (a bit of ) moisture, frizz-free curls and softness. However, if you apply too much, it can cause flaking.
